Hi welcome to Dell Tech Support. Today we are going to focus on the touchpad; how to enable, disable, adjust and fix. For the most part, touchpads and their functions can be specific to every device and even the model. In this video, we will cover the basics to provide a comprehensive guide to your touchpad.
To navigate without a touchpad or Mouse, see a list of keyboard commands in the description below.
To enable or disable the touchpad, in the Start menu type Touchpad and click on Mouse and Touchpad settings. The on off toggle button should be here. If you don’t see it, then your computer may not have this feature, although some systems may have it under Additional mouse options within a touchpad or mouse related tab. Certain Dell models have the tab Clickpad or Dell Touchpad.
For some systems, the on off toggle button will be under Mouse Properties. In the Start menu, type in Control Panel and click on Mouse. There should be a tab dedicated to your touchpad which has the option Click to change Dell Touchpad settings. Clicking on this will open a second window for making touch pad adjustments.
In this Pointing Devices window, you can change the properties which impact how your cursor reacts on screen. With the Sensitivity option selected, you can adjust the speed, the pressure and even palm interaction. Some newer computers have added Gesture features which may cause erratic cursor movement so disabling or changing how they function may stabilize your cursor.
Another way to keep your touchpad running smoothly is by simply keeping it clean. Dirt, grease, sweat, liquids, and food all contribute to poor contact. A clean touchpad, as well as your fingers, will improve responsiveness. To clean the touch pad, use a soft cloth that has been lightly moistened with isopropyl alcohol.
If your touchpad still has some issues, check for the latest installation by going into the Device Manager. Locate and expand Mice and other Pointing Devices to find the touchpad. Double-click on it to open the Properties. Here you will find its status. Click on the Driver tab, select the Update Driver button and follow the instructions.
More in-depth troubleshooting can be done by running a System Restore or doing a PSA Diagnostic Test. For more information on these processes, watch our videos for instructions.

'm trying to disable my touchpad, but I can't find the dell touchpad settings even though this is a dell and the standard ps/2 settings don't work either, there's a "disable" button, but it is greyed and doesn't work
Thank you this worked for me! All i had to do was learn that Tab means jump lol omg, crazy stress. Thanks so much!
my right button is starting to do left click duties and my left mouse button hardly works. it frustrates me when i right click to open a new tab and it goes ahead and clicks the link
We talking about a completely stuck touchpad…. can’t click Anything!!!!!
the left side is kinda loose since just now …..
There is an Other Way…. That Press Fn key + Logo of Toucpad on your laptop's keyboard then it works completely 😊
Take the battery out and put it back. Worked for me.
That was really helpful. Thanks so much!
But how do you know if you need to replace the touchpad?
My laptop's touchpad is not working at all what can I do
I bought a inspirion recently and the mouse constantly freezes. Its awful. I am going to return this. The onus should not be on the user to sort out/debug these issues. Do you have no quality and control processes at Dell? Its a waste of my time.
I LOVE YOU DELL ITS SO MUCH BETTER NOW I LIKE YOU GUYS IL GIVE YOU 5 STARS YOUR SO GOOD
i opened up my Dell Latitude D610 to clean the fan but when I put it back together the usb ports on the right side keeps popping out a tad making the usb port inoperable. I went in again and rescrewed the little black screw that holds it down but to no avail. But the most important and irritable pet peeve is that now my toucpad/mouse is not working..could it be that my keyboard isn't aligned right ? My keyboard is fine when typing… I would greatly appreciate any advice or help you can give me..
Sometimes, the touch pad of my laptop becomes out of control . it moves here and there automatically. What is the solution for this problem
my biggest mistake was buying a dell laptop! spent 1 lac INR on a laptop and it is a total disaster.
at first its speaker (left) stopped working. then later both speaker stopped working. so i started using headphones. now battery lost its 1/2 capacity. fuckin trash laptop. i did some tweaks in settings by reducing the processor utilization to 30%. now my touchpad stopped working.
OMG i am done!
touchpad costs me 16k inr
battery costs me 8k inr
speakers cost me 10k inr
total 34k inr. in that i can make my own pc! fuckin DELL. i will never buy any product and will not let any of my friend to buy one. such a fkin trash company. go to hell with your money bitches.
Update driver is greyed out for me, it isn't working at all for me. The touchpad itself is fine but the left and right-click buttons haven't been responding to touch.
why does my mouse pointer grow in size by at least 5x times when i touch the edge of the monitor?
I think I am starting to regret my decision of buying the dell inspiron as there are many problems like scrolling problem and needing to adjust settings to the right one by reading and finding articles to solve the issues which it is not supposed to be like there should not be any issue in the first place. If Four finger and three finger gestures makes scrolling problem, then why do you enable the settings by default in the first place
Having been a Certified Dell Technician in past times and having worked on out of warranty Dell laptops since I have found using a non-OEM Dell AC Power Adapter can create erratic or freezing of the pointer when using the touchpad. If a mouse is used, no problem. Apparently knockoffs are more susceptible to creating noise that impacts touchpad operations. Following is a link that primarily speaks of Latitude models, however I've found it to be the case with Inspiron models as well.

FYI. When I've run into this problem, replacing a knockoff with the real deal (Dell OEM), this has resulted in resolving the problem 100% of the time.

Dell, pretty please:
– Why did you ever remove the function key to enable/disable trackpad. You have spare function buttons. Does the machine burst in flames or something?
– In your custom configuration window, provide shortcuts, for FSM sake, or at least use a clear background / more contrast, so your unfortunate users can tell apart which panel element is selected.
I use trackpad as little as possible (even decreasing sensibility, phantom pulsations send the cursor away from the point where I am writing, so I prefer the mouse much better).
Making trackpad configuration so difficult to change (specially without a pointing device) is a shot in the head of usability.
touch pad not moving properly or moving automatically

Touchpad of my laptop(model- 13-7359) is not showing up in device manager. It has completely stopped working.
I have a question dell,When I try to do stuff on google my mouse is not showing,I remember when I updated my dell computer my mouse came back and I forgot where it was,If you know where it is could you try to reply me it?Its fine if you can't help.
it helped me to solve the problem, thank you!
How about problem of there is no touchpad options available to configure? where do i download the driver for dell inspiron N4030?
my problem is that the cursor is jumpy, clicks on stuff i didn't click, zooms in the screen by itself. even as I'm typing, the screen zooms by itself and suddenly the video is in full screen although i didn't click on it. When I go to the dell centre, the guy said this is just because of dirt but hmm idk man.
Update driver was NOT highlighted to attempt the fix …
I thought this a mechanical fix troubleshoot video, not something that is common knowledge.
MY LEFT AND RIGHT BUTTON THEY DELAY OR NOT WORK AT ALL SOMETIMES
