How to Use GImageX to Create .wim files from System Images

This video is a short tutorial on how to create a system image of your windows 7 computer and capture that image in a wim file that can be injected into a windows installation iso file and installed on other computers if you have a commercial license.

I made this video because I had a very difficult time finding documentation on how to go about doing these steps in a GUI vs in command line, so in this video I hope to make simple the process by which this is done and help out anyone who prefers a GUI to command line.

GImageX –

I in no way take credit for any of the programs used in this video, and for any of you out there who were wondering, the video was made and edited with Camtasia Studios.

Well that’s about it for now. Hope this mini tutoiral has been helpful to you! feel free to comment and rate it up if you liked it =)

  • Why would you use imageX, when Windows 7 came with a deployment tool– DISM.
    Dism /Capture-Image /ImageFile:"D:Imageswin7.wim" /CaptureDir:C: /Name:WIndows 7

  • Windows 7 comes with Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM.exe). DISM on windows 10 is even better to use. Use Windows 7 to create a Recovery Disk PE only, But windows 10 is even better to use, as it has more options with DISM, Apply-image, Capture-Image , etc..

Why make a WinPE from windows 10? cause Windows 10 1803 or later , supports more than 1 partition on a flash drive. Meaning, if you create a Winpe recovery USB minimum, on a partition and divide the flash drive in two with a second partition, like NTFS, you can dump all the wims on it you want. even if they are All-in-One Wims that have 20 Operating system on it and are larger than 4GB.

List all OSes inside the wim and displays the indexes pertaining to them

    Dism /get-wiminfo /wimfile:G:sourcesinstall.wim

List details of the OS on Index 1.

    Dism /get-wiminfo /wimfile:G:sourcesinstall.wim /index:1

To use DISM to apply drivers and other packages, you must mount the Wim to an empty folder. Then apply your drivers or packages. After you are done, you must commit changes and unmount the Wim from the folder. Dism will also remove things too.

  • yeap nice video, BUT…!!!! you wasted more than one hour doing that. If you use a Live CD you can save 30 mins at the begin. But I have a question, can you use that image on any pc or only on source pc? I use a Live CD + GImagex and I only can use the image on the source pc, except when I use sysprep then I can apply the image on any pc. I made this question because I want make my own installer with the newest updates for each version of OS.

  • Great tutorial. But about about if i want to use it to different computers(sysprep), your picking up a image that is not being sysprep. I think sysprep shut down oobe and then pick the image with win pe. would be ideal.
